Effective rope lubrication: Optimal care for wire ropes

Effective rope lubrication is crucial for the longevity and safety of wire ropes. Continuous relubrication protects against corrosion, reduces friction and significantly extends the service life of the ropes. On January 28, 2025, an internal training course and exchange on the topic of rope lubrication took place in our premises in Stuttgart. Mr. Michael Kronschnabl from the lubricant specialist Elaskon Sachsen GmbH presented valuable insights into the correct application and selection of rope lubricants.

Fundamentals of effective rope lubrication

A key focus of the seminar was the importance of proper lubrication for wire ropes. Fundamental aspects such as base oil production, processing methods, and application recommendations for ropeways and cable cars were discussed. The choice of the right lubricant has a significant impact on the performance of the ropes.

Benefits of regular relubrication

Regular re-lubrication helps reduce wear and corrosion. Factors such as rope construction, usage, and environmental influences determine the optimal lubrication timing. Careful inspection of the rope surface provides insights into existing deposits and the condition of the lubrication.

Methods of rope cleaning for effective rope lubrication

Before re-lubrication, thorough cleaning is required. Manual methods such as wire brushing, as well as mechanical methods like compressed air or dry ice, enable effective removal of contaminants. Important: The use of water and solvent-based cleaning agents should be avoided.

Selection of the right lubricant

The discussion about choosing the right lubricant is almost as old as the rope itself. Which lubricants are suitable for which application and which are not? When should a solvent-based lubricant be used and when should a solvent-free lubricant be used? There was an intensive exchange on these topics between the experienced rope testers, who have to see and assess ropes in operation every day, and the lubricant specialists at Elaskon.

Automatic systems for effective rope lubrication

In addition to manual methods, there are also automatic rope lubricators that ensure even lubrication. Systems such as drip oilers or rope collars enable efficient lubrication over an extended period.

Recommendation: Less is more

Economical but regular lubrication extends the service life of the ropes considerably. Rapidly biodegradable products such as Elaskon WR-EAL are particularly advantageous in maritime environments. For oil-based relubricants, Elaskon NK-S offers high adhesion and excellent corrosion protection properties.

With the right strategy and high-quality products, effective rope lubrication can be ensured, providing safety and reliability in operation.
