ROPESYS Splice Finder – Device for Rope Monitoring

Splice finder – ROPESYS offers solutions for connectable systems.

The ROPESYS splice finder is used to reliably detect the splice in connectable systems.

The magnetic device detects in real time whether a splice is present in the station and, if necessary, sends signals to the control system or warning lights.

Rope splicing: Endless loops for cable cars

In rope splicing, splicers join two rope ends to form an endless loop.

The rope should be as thin as possible to meet the requirements of the coupling clamps. (Here’s an informational video on how to splice a rope)

The dome clamps of modern cable cars allow a maximum thickening of +10% in the splice area compared to the cable diameter.

Experienced splicers usually stay well below that. At the same time, the splice requires regular inspection and maintenance, as it is a particularly sensitive section of the rope loop.

Special requirements for the Wankbahn

In more specialized cable car systems, such as the Wankbahn in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the detachable clamps of the cabins do not allow coupling in the splice area, which is why this must be technically prevented during operation.

The Wankbahn is a fully automatic single-cable gondola lift with gravity clamps of the Swiss Giovanola system, opened by PWH (Pohlig-Weser-Hütte) in 1981.

ROPESYS splice finder: Function and advantages

The splice finder uses magnets to detect whether a splice is present in the station. If the system detects the splice, it can signal the cable car control system to block coupling.

The magnetic inductive detection system ensures that no cabin couples in the splice area.

Automatic splice monitoring thus relieves the burden on staff and optimizes operational processes.

Successful commissioning on the Wankbahn

The first splice finder has been monitoring Section II of the Wankbahn railway for a year. In February 2026, the second splice finder was put into operation on Section I. The safety solution now covers the entire railway line.

Safety and innovation through the splice finder

The splice finder demonstrates how ROPESYS develops practical and innovative safety solutions. The combination of magnetic inductive detection, real-time monitoring, and control integration ensures maximum safety.

Furthermore, the system relieves the burden on staff and improves the efficiency of the cable car.

Solution for special detachable cable cars

The installation on the Wankbahn cable car illustrates how important technological innovations are in sensitive areas.

With the ROPESYS splice finder, ROTEC offers a solution worldwide that significantly increases safety, reliability and efficiency in special detachable cable car systems.
