Haul rope inspection material ropeway Dominica – operation in the Caribbean.

Haul rope inspection material ropeway Dominica – this was the focus of the recent assignment of Sven Winter. Our head of inspection travelled to the Caribbean island of Dominica, which is part of the Lesser Antilles.

There he carried out a magnetic inspection of the haul rope of the material ropeway, which is currently being used on the construction site of the world’s longest monocable gondola lift.

Safety for the world’s longest cable car

The future gondola lift in Dominica will set a world record at 6.6 kilometers in length. It will run directly through Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with rainforest, volcanic formations, and hot springs.

Particularly famous is the Boiling Lake, the second-largest thermal spring in the world. Instead of a six-hour hike, it will soon be possible to reach the lake in just 20 minutes by cable car. This is precisely why the material cable car currently in operation plays a crucial role in the construction.

Important contribution to safety

The traction cable test was necessary to ensure operational safety. The cable is subjected to heavy daily stress as it transports tons of material over rough terrain.

The magnetic test allows for inspection of not only the outer wire layers, but also the inner wire layers. Sven Winter determined that the traction cable is in safe operating condition. This ensures its safe use for the rest of the construction.

Nature, technology and tourism in harmony

The scenery is simply breathtaking. During the ride, Sven crossed the steaming Boiling Lake and gazed at two waterfalls that will later become highlights of the new cable car.

This made the rope test an unforgettable experience. The operation demonstrated how closely nature and technology intertwine here.

A project of global importance

The new cable car is being built by Doppelmayr and is considered a milestone for sustainable tourism. Visitor numbers to Dominica are expected to increase significantly.

This opens up a major economic opportunity for the local population. At the same time, the project ensures that more people can experience the spectacular natural landscape without putting strain on the fragile ecosystem through hours of hiking.

Successful examination and outlook

The traction cable test of the material cable car was successfully completed; the operational safety of the traction cable has been confirmed.

This deployment also demonstrates how the ROPESYS magnetic rope testing system is used worldwide – from the Alps to the tropics. This deployment is making an important contribution to the construction of the world’s longest cable car in Dominica.
