Combined rope inspection using magnetic and optical inspection technology.

How can the condition of a wire rope be assessed as comprehensively as possible? Modern testing methods now combine magnetic and optical rope inspection to reliably detect both internal and external damage.

While magnetic rope testing provides information on the internal condition of a wire rope, optical rope testing complements these results with a detailed examination of the rope’s surface. Our new film clearly demonstrates how both methods are used together in practice.

Optimal combination of magnetic and optical methods

Magnetic rope testing has long been established as a proven method for evaluating wire ropes. It enables the reliable detection of internal wire breaks and cross-sectional losses.

However, the external condition of the rope also plays a crucial role in a comprehensive assessment of its state. In many applications, this inspection is still carried out via a manual visual check.

This is precisely where optical rope inspection expands existing capabilities. The ROPESYS FALCON F58 camera system continuously captures the entire rope surface along its full length.

Four high-resolution cameras document even the smallest changes and provide additional image data for subsequent analysis.

Practical insight into combined rope testing

The new promotional film demonstrates, step by step, the procedure for a combined rope inspection on a cable car. It shows both the installation of the ROPESYS R58 magnetic rope inspection device and the setup of the ROPESYS FALCON F58 optical camera system.

Subsequently, the film follows the actual inspection process during the plant’s ongoing operation.

In addition, various camera views of the wire rope and the installation of the testing systems are shown, alongside the analysis of the recorded data on the monitor. This illustrates how both testing methods operate in parallel and effectively complement each other.

More information for a reliable condition assessment

Visual rope inspection is not an alternative to magnetic rope inspection, but a useful supplement.

It provides additional visual information on the condition of the rope surface and helps to document anomalies, track changes, and evaluate the results in conjunction with the magnetic measurement data.

Combining both methods creates a sound basis for the reliable condition assessment of safety-critical wire ropes.

Our new promotional film provides a concise overview of this modern testing technology and demonstrates how combined rope testing is carried out in practice today.
