Disney Skyliner – ROPESYS in use on one of the world’s largest cable car systems.
After the Christmas holidays, ROTEC and ROPESYS started the year 2026 with full energy. While all machines were restarting in development and production, international customer appointments were also on the agenda.
At the beginning of the year, Dr. Martin Wehr travelled to the USA to support several clients and projects on site.
A particular focus was placed on the Disney Skyliner at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Disney Skyliner rope testing with ROPESYS rope testing devices
The Disney Skyliner cable car system is a central component of transportation at Walt Disney World Resort.
With almost 300 Omega IV 10-berth cabins, the system connects, among others, Epcot, the Riviera Resort, Caribbean Beach, Hollywood Studios and Pop Century.
Since many millions of passengers are transported annually, the safety and availability of the system plays a crucial role.
To ensure this permanently, ROPESYS rope testing devices are used on all three lines.
The devices were supplied to the cable car company via the rope manufacturer FATZER AG from Switzerland and are permanently integrated into the operation. This allows the condition of the three rope loops to be continuously monitored.
The rope testing therefore takes place around the clock. Meanwhile, the ropes are inspected 24/7 and monitored in real time.
Especially in a system that is in operation almost continuously 365 days a year, this constant monitoring represents a crucial safety factor.
On-site calibration as a crucial advantage
Another important aspect during the US visit was the ROPESYS on-site calibration. Thanks to this capability, the rope testing devices can be checked and calibrated directly at the customer’s site.
This eliminates the need for complex, expensive and time-consuming shipping routes to the manufacturer or external parties.
At the same time, the testing equipment is available to the teams without restriction at all times. Since no shipping is required, the risk of transport damage or loss is also completely eliminated.
For users such as Knight Equipment Co. or Doppelmayr CableCar (DCC) at the Disney Skyliner, this means a clear time and cost advantage as well as a consistently high availability of the testing equipment.
Knight Equipment Co. as a strong partner in the USA
During the trip, Dr. Martin Wehr also visited Knight Equipment Co. in Missouri.
Justin Knight and his team have specialized in splicing and testing cableways throughout the USA for many years. They consistently rely on ROPESYS rope testing equipment and have the full range of machine sizes available on site.
This close collaboration demonstrates how flexibly and practically the ROPESYS systems can be used in international applications. At the same time, it is becoming clear that modern rope testing is now much more than just an inspection.
Rope testing Disney Skyliner as a benchmark for modern rope monitoring
The Disney Skyliner rope test illustrates the importance of continuous condition monitoring in high-traffic cable car systems.
The continuous monitoring and real-time evaluation create a high level of transparency and security.
Especially in complex systems with extremely high utilization, this form of rope testing is increasingly becoming the standard.
ROPESYS rope testing devices thus make a crucial contribution to the safety, availability and cost-effectiveness of modern cable car systems – worldwide.
