Magnetic rope testing: Galileo features ROTEC at the Nebelhornbahn.

Magnetic rope testing was the focus of an exciting TV report. In the ProSieben program Galileo on December 20, 2024, our experts Sven Winter and Sebastian Traub impressively demonstrated how rope inspections are carried out. The filming took place at the modern Nebelhornbahn in Oberstdorf.

Technology of magnetic rope testing in focus
Magnetic rope testing is a highly precise method used to thoroughly examine both carrying ropes and hauling ropes. During the filming, Sebastian Traub explained how even the smallest signs of wear or damage can be detected. These steel ropes consist of hundreds of wires that are crucial for the safety of the cabins.

Extreme operation at great heights
The Nebelhornbahn is considered one of the most modern cable cars in Germany. It impresses with its 4.5-kilometer-long route and advanced technology. However, working at such heights is a special challenge. Despite freezing temperatures and demanding conditions, our experts carried out the inspections with precision.

Safety inspection of towers and ropes
During the inspection of the rope towers, Sven Winter demonstrated the use of state-of-the-art technology. Using safety harnesses and body cameras, the ropes were checked for wear. Additionally, our experts monitored the lubrication film to prevent corrosion. They worked at dizzying heights without railings, requiring maximum concentration.

Insights into rope testing
The Galileo program provided fascinating insights into the world of rope testing. Viewers not only learned about the technology but also discovered intriguing facts. Interestingly, Sebastian Traub explained why the term “cabins” is used for cable cars instead of “gondolas.” According to him, the term “gondola” is only fitting in Venice.
